[EDIT 13 JUNE 2008] Well readers, kata rokkar will be off the air until mid-late July.
Right now it's under construction. I have a friend working on it during my move and I expect large amounts of awesomeness. You can see his work here.
I was going to end things with Weebly  but they recently contacted me and we have been working things out with glitches and bugs. I really hope for some great things to out of this...

Well this is it. I have spend 6 yrs of my career on the East Coast. I have met some of the most amazing people from Boston to Maine. I have worked with some really fantastic and professional people and hope to see them soon. That's what really made my job at the Coast Guard in Maine so enjoyable and rewarding; it was the people. I can only hope that my new coworkers will have the same energy and attitude.
As for the people I have meet here outside of work. I love you guys the most. I'm going to miss all of you and I really hope all of you will come out to visit whenever you have the opportunity. Keep in touch and don't be a stranger.

I'll miss you Massachusetts...you've been good to me.

California here I come!

Jonah Matranga - So Long

After listening to all those awesome Björk covers songs from Stereogum, I felt inclined to post my own little cover tribute to my favorite singer of all time. However, I did notice that every other music blog on planet Earth has done the same thing. I guess I'll have to pull out the Helmet cover, among other ridiculous Björk covers.

In addition, I finally got the day off for the Cursive show next week. The last time I had the opportunity to catch Cursive live, I unfortunately got dragged to see a local band called School for Robots. Lets just say a packed Avalon in Boston with Mastodon, Against Me, and Cursive was probablybetter than 3 people at the Middle East Downstairs in Cambridge with your girlfriends crazy lizard obsessed friend. Nuff said.

Johnny Cash - I Still Miss Someone

At my door the leaves are falling
A cold wild wind has come
Sweethearts walk by together
And I still miss someone

I go out on a party
And look for a little fun
But I find a darkened corner
because I still miss someone

Oh, no I never got over those blues eyes
I see them every where
I miss those arms that held me
When all the love was there

I wonder if she's sorry
For leavin' what we'd begun
There's someone for me somewhere
And I still miss someone

Like I said earlier this month; this will be a concert year to remember. Here’s 5 – 1 of the best concerts I’ve been to this year.

5 - TIE. Woven / Finn Riggins at Milly’s Tavern, Manchester, NH – This show was really something special. I have been searching for records of this band for years and I eventually found their full length and older E.P. this past year. When I found out they were playing up here (in a bar in Manchester too) I was stunned and very excited. I had to drive almost an hour up to New Hampshire to see this band play at midnight, when I had to get up for work at 4am. So add in the hour drive and you’ll get a recipe for disaster. Well show wasn’t, they have such an amazing live presence. And the new E.P. is far beyond anything they’ve ever done. Simply remarkable all around.

5 - TIE. Interpol / Liars at the Agganis Arena in Boston, MA – Katie was able to score some fucking awesome seats (3rd row) at this enormous stadium to see Interpol. They were just incredible. Whether it was the lights or the perfect sound they had that night…I don’t know…they were just on point.

4. Division Day / iLIKETRAINS / Dylan in the Movies / Lady of Spain at the Middle East Upstairs in Cambridge, MA – Seeing that Division Day was coming to Boston made me scream out loud, “Holy Shhhhhit!” I’ve been a fan of Division Day since ’03 and this was an opportunity I was not going to miss, especially with their new record in heavy rotation in my car stereo. This show was absolutely perfect. Katie and I got to hear pretty much every song we wanted to hear from them. Also I got their old self-titled E.P. signed by the whole band.

3. M.I.A. / Big Digits at the Palladium in Worcester, MA – There isn’t much to say other than, wow. She is truly an artist to be reckoned with. The show involved your average crowd interaction as well as some the coolest imagery in the background on the big screen behind her. She played pretty much everything off her latest album as well as favorites off Arular. The whole show was full out energy in it’s truest form.

2. Jonah Matranga at the Paradise Lounge and the house show in Boston, MA – What it is it, the 20th time seeing him live?  This time though was very special to me. One of Katie’s friends and my best friend was finally able to attend what I consider one the best live shows on earth (I mean that by the way). I like to believe we all became better people after that night.

1. Björk / Konono No.1 at Radio City Music Hall, New York, NY – This show is number one for a multiple of reasons. First off this was my brother’s first concert ever. For what I could tell, he was having the time of his life. Second, this was just such an awe-inspiring show of epic proportions. She had everyone from her recent record show up and do their guest performances. Antony Hegarty on The Dull Flame of Desire, Konono No.1 on Earth Intruders (with flames on stage), and even Min Xiao-Fen on I See Who You Are. This show was one to remember and one of the best I’ve ever been to. There was even a guy on the train on the way back who said my brother had already peaked in his concert experiences. Maybe, at least until the next Björk concert.

This Björk mp3 will not be from the new album though, but from her finest work and the best album for winter, Vespertine.

Runner-ups –
Strata at the Living Room in Providence, RI
Do Make Say Think / The Berg Sans Nipple at the SPACE in Portland, ME
3 / The Distraction at the Middle East Upstairs in Cambridge, MA
Jenny Owen Youngs / Sean Hayes at the SPACE in Portland, ME

That's right. So all you hipster shits out there better keep your skinny jeans and aviator sunglasses out of his sight or else he'll take a freakin' axe to your neck. No seriously, in Jonah Matranga's recent video for "Not About A Place or A Girl," he goes around singing what sounds like a Gin Blossoms cover and kills scenster zombies without mercy. It's a wonderful video despite the sugarcoated song. In fact, don't judge that song alone for his newest record, And. Only one other song follows that happy late nineties escapism radio rock shit; the rest of the album is as much as an emotional punch as the newest Radiohead. Actually Radiohead ripped off Jonah whether they know it or not. Jonah Matranga has been using the sliding scale price system for years and has always brought new and strange ideas to his shows and music. Although, you have to see Jonah Matranga live to really embrace what and who this man is. His shows are something so intimate and personal, that you feel as if it is only you and him in the room. Even picking up his recent live CD/DVD won't do him justice. You actually have to show up and experience the show first hand. If you are at all curious as to who or what Jonah Matranga is; go to www.jonahmatranga.com or www.myspace.com/jonahmatranga. Or you can even download the songs I posted of him performing solo, under the moniker onelinedrawing and his old band New End Original.. If you're a scenster, keep an eye out for this guy, he'll rip you limb from limb, Mwahahahaha!

if i don't feel the need to write i'm going to write anyhow....huh?

i've been trying to teach my brother how to draw but i just can't figure out how i learned how to do it in the first place. it all just kind of came to me i guess. i drew some really twisted shit back when i was his age. like people dying in plane crashes while their testicles were on fire with a giant godzilla-like creature peeing on them with acid pee. i know, it's sad. but i turned out alright, i'm not peeing on anyone (that i can remember). i just see so much potential he has in his drawings that i want him to develop his own style and work toward that. he knows what he wants, the only thing i can do is guide him....with giant peeing godzilla creatures.

speaking of style, this guy jonah matranga has been a huge influence in everything i've ever done since the year 2002. his lyrics and honesty have molded me into the person i've always wanted to be...okay maybe not, but he is my favorite singer-songwriter right next to bob dylan and sean hayes. this track is from his latest concoction of songs called 'And.' you've probably seen him around, nonetheless, he's really good. enjoy...

Jonah Matranga - 'So Long' from the album 'And' out September 21st 2007
