Films like these don’t come around very often. I can’t remember the last time I watched a movie that spoke to me like my favorite record. Well, that is what the movie, Once has done for me. Set in Dublin, it's a boy-meets-girl love tale where both protagonists also happen to be musicians; as such, much of what they feel is expressed through the music they play and the songs they sing. The film is able to express honesty and genuine emotion through these wonderfully crafted characters. Both of the actors have had zero acting experience and both somehow do a better job than most high paid movie stars. I’ve always thought that musicians are almost always phenomenal actors when given the opportunity. Björk in Dancer in the Dark is a prime example. She even won a Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for her performance. These people may not be trained in acting, but they know about expressing emotions better than anyone. Anyway, the film’s songs are so heartfelt and disarming that I found myself buying the record the day after seeing the film. Especially given my recent relationship situation, songs like When Your Mind’s Made Up, Falling Slowly, and Once have been on repeat on my mp3 player. For those interested, check out the film’s website or rent the movie when you get the chance; you won’t regret it.
